Thatched house inside the nobleman’s House. It doesn’t seem like a good match, does it? But, there is a thatched house in the very inside of the magnificent nobleman’s House.
The name of this house is called thatched cottage.
The thatched cottage has the meaning of Joseon Dynasty nobleman’s living along with the commoners who lived in the straw-thatched houses.
This place has the meaning of coexistence built one for each house.
Thus, all buildings of all Yangban Homes were made of tiled roof, but this thatched cottage was made of straws, known as straw thatched-roof.
Generally, thatched cottage was built in the deepest area of the garden or the back side of the Inner Wing where the house was blocked from the outside.
The reason was because unmarried daughters or just married daughter-in-law stayed in this place.
Look around the thatched house that is located in the most covert place and reflect on the meaning of coexistence in Joseon Dynasty.
