[53] Noble man’s house-Inner Wing

The Inner Wing is the space for women and the female owner. Centering the wide main hall, the Inner Wing is composed of the main room and various small rooms. To the far right is where the kitchen is located. Because Joseon Dynasty had polygamy, the female owner stayed in the Inner Wing, and the other wives stayed in the inner annex.

The most important space in the Inner Wing is the front yard with the crock platform. The crock platform is the container used to store soy sauce, bean paste, and red pepper paste. Our ancestors thought very importantly of celebrating work of making and storing pastes as an annual event. The sauce is tastier when stored for a longer time. The lady of the house washes the crocks to maintain flavor. The crock platform was considered sacredly. Devout prayers were done with water on top of the crock platform when there was a dearest wish or when there were troubles in the house. Now, there is a small door to the side of the Inner Wing, which is a door connected to the thatched cottage. Let’s move to the thatched cottage.
