The Ulleung Island Private House in this place is the traditional house from the northern part of Ulleung Island. Ulleung Island is famous for much snow during the winter. People cannot go out of the house because of the snow. For this reason, the inside of the house has rooms, kitchen, bathroom, and even storeroom. Also, unfloored areas between two rooms were made with soil in between the outer wall and inner wall where people can pass between rooms without having to go outside of the house. The biggest characteristic of Ulleung Island Private House is the udegi. ‘Udegi’ is made of pampas grass tied together on the wall is made of logs tied together. This blocks the strong wind during the winter. The roof is also made by connecting pampas grass or shingle. When fire is made in the furnace of the kitchen, the heat moves around in between the udegi and roof to make the house warm.
