[40] Jeju Island Private House

Let’s take a look at the house of our ancestors who lived in Jeju Island - the biggest island of Korea. Jeju is an island, which is warm with also high humidity. The island is also famous for a lot of wind, snow, and rain. The roof of Jejudo Private House looks round as if a ship is flipped over.

The roof is made roundly so that snow or rain does not stack. Also, the houses in Jeju are built slightly shorter than the houses of other areas. Moreover, the roof connected with silver grass is fixed tightly with ropes so that the roof does not fly away by the wind. The wall and fence are all made by stacking rocks. There is a lot of rainfall during all four seasons, but the island is made of volcanoes where drinking water was very precious. In Jeju Island, many methods were developed to collect water. One of the methods includes tying a pot called ‘Chamhang’ on the trees in front of the house. When it rains, the rain falls along the trees and is collected in the Chamhang. The collected water was usually used for drinking. It may seem simple but also graceful. Let’s move to the next Jejudo house having the special lifestyle.
