This house is a restoration of a traditional house that once existed in Yangdong-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongsanbuk-do.
It is known to have been used as a "seodang" (a traditional school).
A seodang was an educational institution during the Joseon Dynasty, similar to modern elementary schools.
The central educational institution was Sungkyunkwan, and there were local schools called "hyanggyo."
Additionally, there were private schools such as "seowon" and smaller institutions like seodang.
At a seodang, students studied textbooks such as the "Cheonjamun" (Thousand Character Classic), "Dongmongseonseup,"
and "Gyeongmongpyeon," and also learned how to keep their surroundings clean and proper etiquette for adults.
On the first day of each month and the fifteenth, exams called "gang" were held, and the student with the best results was called "jangwon" (the top student).
The top student's family would prepare rice cakes and alcohol to treat the teacher and fellow students.
This house features a unique southern-style layout, with two one-room tiled houses and thatched houses arranged in an L-shape (ㄱ-shape).
The main house has a single room in the center with two ondol rooms connected to it, allowing for variation in the space. The lower house also has two ondol rooms on each side, providing space for many people.
