[24] Traditional Fan Workshop

Today, we avoid the heat with electric fan or air conditioner, but a fan was used in the old times to create wind. The fan was a thankful tool that was responsible for the hot summer of our ancestors. There are many types of fans including the folding fan, and there was also the ‘Dunggeul Fan’ called Banggu fan, which was made by sticking paper or silk on the ribs of the fan in circular shape.

Dunggeul fans are made in this traditional fan workshop only with the 30 years of traditional method. The production process of the Dunggeul fan is long and complex. First is to repeat the process of simmering and drying bamboo in kiln. Then, the bamboo is carved to make the ribs of the fan. This process takes 1 year. When made in this way, the durability is strong and the fan can be used for a long time. Furthermore, it can create cooler wind that cannot be compared to the fans made by machine. How about purchasing the fan with hanji and awesome decoration on the fan containing the touch of a master craftsman?
