[12] House in the northern part-Cotton Weaving Workshop

Private houses in the northern part were the best to prevent the cold in winter. They had low eaves, rooms were closely attached together, and windows were very small or did not exist at all.

However, the kitchen and rooms were spacious for people to live indoors in cold winter, and Goodle, the Korean floor heating system that was the best heating method invented by our ancestors, were installed so that they could endure the harsh cold winter. Roofs contain our ancestors’ wisdom as well, and were very rough compared to the roofs of the houses in the southern part house. This was because the roots of straw was weaved outward by a handspan when straw thatch was weaved, which was wise as the roof was not turned inside out despite the wind and the heating effect could increase. The roof even had a long lifespan, too. Tools for weaving cotton, the most commonly worn fabric by our ancestors, are displayed in the room. Also, this room recreates the process of weaving threads together with a spinning wheel. Cotton cloth is made of cotton, which was picked, dried well, and was put in a tool called ‘Ssia’ to get seeds out. Cotton without seeds was rolled with a push stick to make cocoons, and when this cocoon floss was hung on a ‘spinning wheel’ and turned, threads were formed. Thin threads are coming out from the cottons that look like clouds. Also, when these threads are put on the loom and weaved, white cotton cloth was finally created. .
