[10] Dutiful Son’s Monument

Dutiful Son’s Monument is a gate granted by the state to a person who is exceptionally devoted and filial piety to his parents. It was mostly built on a street corner or a town entrance where people would often pass by to spread the filial piety widely. The name of Dutiful Son’s Monument I am trying to explain now is ‘Baekwonmun,’ meaning that filial duty is the source of all human life.

The main character of this Dutiful Son’s Monument is dutiful son Deok-kyu Lee who lived in late Joseon Dynasty. He lost his dad when he was young and was brought up by his widowed mother, and one day when his mother became very ill, Lee broke ice in the middle of winter to catch a carp to save his mother. When such filial behavior is known the state built this Baekwonmun in 1904 to honor his filial piety and praised his filial act.
