Also known as a "cloud bridge," Hongyegyo is a sophisticated structure traditionally built using stone blocks arranged in a semi-circular arch.
These types of bridges were often found in temples and palaces, serving as important passageways, and were also aesthetically constructed in areas with beautiful natural scenery.
Because of their curved structure, Hongyegyo bridges are structurally stable and have been used since ancient times.
The earliest known examples are the Cheongungyo (Blue Cloud Bridge), Baegungyo (White Cloud Bridge), Chilbogyo (Seven Treasures Bridge), and Yeonhwagyo (Lotus Flower Bridge) of Bulguksa Temple from the 8th century.
Even today, arched bridges continue to be built and used, so rather than viewing them simply as ancient stone bridges, it is more appropriate to see them as a timeless and enduring architectural form.
